What I do

Louise was Director of Innovation Policy and Futures within the Policy and Research team. She managed Nesta's work on innovation policy and technology futures. She previously worked on reports on startup finance, healthcare, semiconductors, big data and innovation policy.


Prior to joining Nesta, Louise was an Investment Analyst at active venture investment firm Blenheim Chalcot, where she carried out analysis of the investment portfolio and led on strategic projects.

Louise has previously worked as a Project Manager and Business Analyst for IMS Health, a pharmaceutical data company, and has a background in software development and services. Louise has a BA in Natural Sciences (Neuroscience) from the University of Cambridge and a Masters in Computer Science from UCL.

2014 will be the year when companies start to offer services that can help us improve our lives based on data. A prediction from our 2014 predictions series, by Louise Marston.

The new Government Interrogating Spending Tool - or GIST - says it represents "the next stage in the government's transparency agenda". It provides some nice looking graphics that allow a couple of layers of government departmental spending to be examined. It is in beta, so one should be cautious about criticising it in its current form.

We held a really productive workshop with the recipients of our big data for innovation research grants last week at Nesta. There were different views in the room about whether we should be using the term 'big data' or not.
