What I do

Larry Ryan was the editor of The Long + Short, Nesta’s digital magazine which ran between 2014-2017.

Before joining Nesta, Larry worked at The Independent newspaper for six and a half years. While there, Larry had been Deputy Editor of The Independent Magazine; previously he was Assistant Home News Editor for The Independent and its sister publication i, and Comment & Communities Editor for independent.co.uk. He also wrote a music column for the paper for several years and continues to write an occasional, and very brief, column called ‘Takin’ it Easy with Larry Ryan’ on the joys of laziness.

Larry moved to London in 2007. Prior to that he worked as a journalist in New York and Dublin. He has a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin.

It’s not a cheery topic but innovation is part of the discussion about stagnation. How can innovation help to lift us out of stasis? How do we come up with new ideas and make new things when we're stuck? That’s why stagnation is the theme of the third season of The Long + Short

The second season of The Long + Short is dedicated to labs: from traditional science labs to public and social innovation labs and beyond, labs are proliferating everywhere.

The Long + Short will be published quarterly: rather than issues, we will be having seasons, running stories over the course of a month or so. Each season will be themed around a unifying idea. The first season is called 'Re' and looks at how most innovation involves a 're' activity - remixing, reusing, redoing, reinterpreting.
