About Nesta

Nesta is an innovation foundation. For us, innovation means turning bold ideas into reality and changing lives for the better. We use our expertise, skills and funding in areas where there are big challenges facing society.

Using intelligence about the future to change practice today.

Mission Discovery identifies and investigates emerging trends, ideas, technologies and partnerships that could unlock new paths to impact. We uncover what's possible, challenge assumptions, and explore ambitious, long-term opportunities that others might overlook.

What we do

Across our three missions, we are committed to ambitious goals. Mission Discovery helps to ensure that we remain open-minded about the best ways of achieving those goals, searching out alternative approaches and challenging our own assumptions when necessary.  The work furthers four objectives:

  • Identifying novel opportunities for accelerating and scaling mission impact – ensuring that we consider novel and transformational ways of achieving our missions and facilitating the scaling of Nesta’s interventions.
  • Harnessing AI and emerging technology – building our capacity to stay ahead in AI and emerging tech, prototyping ideas, partnering with the government around AI, and shaping technologies for social good.
  • Building Nesta as an applied innovation powerhouse – showcasing our innovation methods, undertaking innovation thought leadership, and pioneering the next generation of innovation tools.
  • Strengthening cross-cutting partnerships and networks – forging partnerships beyond our mission domains, convening coalitions and supporting Nesta to make contact with reality.

Our approach

We are interdisciplinary, uniting futures methods, data science, qualitative research, innovation programmes and more.

We strive to be at the cutting edge of innovation, constantly exploring, developing and applying new methods and techniques.

We take a long-term view, looking beyond immediate pressures to explore the social, economic and technological drivers which will shape our lives – and missions – in the decades to come.

We are led by social impact. While some innovations we explore are at a very early stage, the idea or technology must have real potential to generate public benefit – not just profit.
