A new partnership between Scottish Government and Nesta to invest in digital technologies that use public and personal health data to help people lead healthier lives.
A pioneering new fund, the Healthier Lives Data Fund, will provide grants of up to £30,000 each to projects that use health and care data - from national statistics to insights from wearable technology like Fitbits - to improve the health of people living in Scotland.
The fund comes in response to the rising availability of data related to our health and wellbeing, as well as the Scottish Government’s ambition that everyone living in Scotland will have access to the digital information, tools and services they need to help maintain and improve their health and wellbeing.
The Scottish Government and Nesta, who are partners on the project, hope that projects might use data to help people manage long-term conditions, improve conversations between patients and doctors, help people to make lifestyle changes, or to give people better control over their data and allow them to share it safely.
Sinead Mac Manus, Senior Programme Manager for Digital Health at Nesta, said:
“We generate huge volumes of data about things that affect our health every day - from the number of steps we take, to the food we eat, and the way we feel, not to mention the detailed records held about us individuals by our doctors and government information about whole populations.
“New technology creates the potential to combine this information in exciting new ways that, properly managed, could have a triple win of benefiting individuals, supporting professional decision making, and helping medical research.”
