Thousands of social housing homes are being retrofitted with air source heat pumps, but low-quality installations remain a widespread problem. Sub-optimal performance drives up running costs for residents at risk of fuel poverty, strains the energy grid and risks damaging public trust in green technology.

On Thursday 22 October, 12:00–13:00 BST, we will explore how local authorities and social housing providers can deliver higher-quality decarbonisation. Drawing on learnings from more than 90 audits conducted in collaboration with Bristol City Council, this session will unpack why sub-optimal heat pump installations happen and reveal practical, low-cost fixes that can immediately improve performance and tenant experience. The session will be chaired and presented by Codrina Cretu, senior mission manager, Nesta, who will be joined by Matt Jones from Bristol City Council.

The discussion will focus on identifying common installation barriers; the tangible benefits of minor system adjustments on running costs and tenant satisfaction and practical steps social housing providers can take to audit their own stock.
