About Nesta

Nesta is a research and innovation foundation. We apply our deep expertise in applied methods to design, test and scale solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, working across the innovation lifecycle.

Our mission is to ensure every child has the same chance of developing to their full potential in the early years.

Scotland is doing a lot to support families with babies and young children through the Scottish Child Payment and the childcare offer, but we also know that there are persistent and increasing inequalities in developmental outcomes at age five. The earliest years of a child’s life are crucial and the most effective point for intervention.

Our policy asks

To create the greatest impact, the next Scottish Government and parliament should:

  • prioritise babies and early childhood in national and local policymaking
  • push further on reducing child poverty rates for families with a baby under one
  • maintain and then meet the current developmental concern target
