To explore future challenges and provoke debate of how to achieve greater community resilience in emergencies, Nesta working with futures organisation Changeist, community designers, front-line emergency management professionals and civil society, created five speculative futures set in 2023.
These artefacts immerse you in scenarios that consider different organising models, citizen actions and ecosystem requirements.
The interplay shows how this can generate valuable community acts and improved resilience. Together we hope to better seize the potential for collectively building community resilience.

Modular, portable backup power sources that can be DIY manufactured within the community
An emergency pack held by a micro-depot or distribution point alongside some signage used by the enterprise
A system that predicted flooding from photographs taken by the local community which were shared on social media
Coin-making tools and tokens used to pay and thank people for their work and assistance in the community
