About Nesta

Nesta is an innovation foundation. For us, innovation means turning bold ideas into reality and changing lives for the better. We use our expertise, skills and funding in areas where there are big challenges facing society.

The Better Takeaways Project

With £820 million spent on Scottish takeaways each year, more and more people are relying on takeaways for quality, affordable meals. But there’s a lot of choices out there for customers. Rising costs and big chains to compete with can make it hard to stand out as a small business.

For this reason, Nesta have launched The Better Takeaways Project, a programme to support some of Scotland’s independent takeaways in standing out and developing their menus to be the most delicious and nutritious they can be.

What will businesses get?

  • A grant of £10,000 to support delivery costs and cover staff time
  • One-to-one support from researchers, designers, and business/cuisine experts

Is my business eligible?

We’re looking for independent takeaway businesses in Scotland, who are happy to work with us over a few months and open to trying something new.

How will the project work?

  1. We’ll get to know businesses through visits, interviews and online calls.
  2. Together, we’ll design changes to trial. They’ll be focused on nutrition, so may look at how food is advertised, prepared or served.
  3. Businesses will test out changes, and keep a diary about the process. We’ll drop in for visits, and be on hand to help.
  4. We’ll reflect on what worked well and could be improved, and be there if businesses would benefit from ongoing support.

Who is running the project?

We are a team of researchers and designers working in a team called a healthy life at Nesta. Our work is about making it easier to access healthy food, by improving food systems in Scotland and the wider UK. Nesta is an innovation agency for social good, which has been encouraging, supporting and inspiring innovation for over 20 years. You can read more about our work by exploring our website.
