This year the Government launched a hydrogen strategy to drive forward its Ten Point Plan for a green industrial revolution. So is hydrogen the answer to the UK’s net zero goal? What are the advantages, limitations and risks of hydrogen use and can it play a role in reducing household emissions?

Held in partnership with Environmental Defense Fund, CEO Ravi Gurumurthy and a panel of industry experts on 23 September explored the potential opportunities and limitations of hydrogen as a tool to accelerate decarbonisation.

This event is essential listening for those working in the energy sector, from policy-makers to researchers or anyone interested in learning about the role of hydrogen on the road to net zero.

Paul Wheelhouse, Former Scottish Government Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy

Following a 19 year career as an economic development consultant to public and private sector clients, Paul Wheelhouse was elected to serve as an MSP representing the South of Scotland in 2011, at which time Paul joined the Parliament’s Finance Committee and Standards procedures and Public Appointments Committee. A regular contributor to debates in his first year, where he was one of the most frequent speakers in debate, Paul served on a number of cross party groups and was deputy convener of the Cross Party Group on Sport. Paul was promoted to Ministerial Office in September 2012, initially as Minister for Environment & Climate Change, where Paul was able to build his knowledge of agricultural policy, and, from November 2014, as Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs. Paul was awarded ‘Politician of the Year’ in the 2015 Nature of Scotland Awards in recognition of his contribution to conservation of Scotland’s wildlife and natural environment.

Steven Hamburg, Chief Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund

Steven plays a leading role in Environmental Defense Fund's research efforts, including work on quantifying methane emissions from the natural gas supply chain and the use of emerging sensor technologies in improving our understanding of air pollution and related impacts on human health. He has been actively involved in biogeochemistry, forest ecology and climate change impacts research for more than 35 years, and has published more than 100 scientific papers.

Ilissa Ocko, Senior Climate Scientist, Barbra Streisand Chair of Environmental, Environmental Defense Fund

Ilissa employs climate models to explore how short-lived climate pollutants, such as methane and black carbon, influence various climate conditions. Ilissa also works to improve metrics that compare climate impacts of various mitigation strategies. She holds a certificate in environmental policy from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School, has done scientific illustrations for groups like Climate Central and Weather Underground, and as an undergraduate she was a weather anchor on the university’s television network.
