Future of publishing

This report examines the impact digital technology has had, and is likely to have, on small and medium sized publishers.

This report examines the impact digital technology has had, and is likely to have, on small and medium sized publishers.

Key findings:

  • The consumer publishing sector is changing rapidly, largely due to the internet and digital platforms such as smartphones, e-readers and tablets.
  • With these changes come new challenges for SME publishers, as they adapt to the increasing importance of online content. Many are facing a skills gap among their employees.
  • There is a reluctance among publishers to make costly investments in technology and skills, given the fast rate of change.

This research by Nesta and BML Bowker gives an overview of the publishing sector in the South West. It highlights the areas of greatest potential for SME publishers, as well the greatest areas of concern. Not only is the traditional business model of publishing houses increasingly disrupted, but they are also facing competition from varied organisations which have digital innovation at their core.

This report has four key objectives: to map the industry landscape, to highlight business modelling and the creation of new revenue streams,  to share knowledge and experience, and to establish partnerships for future developments.

As a follow up to the research, Nesta supported Cyprus Well, Media Futures and Plymouth University to run a programme 'The Future of Publishing' including workshops, hands-on product/service development, conferences and the production of a case study resource.

This report captures the key lessons from the programme with detailed examples of digital innovation across the sector.
