Worthwhile is helping solve a problem faced by small charities (attracting talented graduates) while providing graduates with training and experience to start successful careers in the social impact sector.

It was founded in 2013 as part of the Hub Ventures family of organisations, with Robbie Sempler taking responsibility for making it work as a stand-alone venture. Today it offers ten month programmes for graduates in charities such as Challenge Partners, Student Minds and Oomph.

Graduates receive a Living Wage, so the organisation is also helping to get rid of the need to take unpaid internships. “We’ve seen people who wouldn’t have been able to [start their careers with unpaid internships], who have gone on to do great things,” says Robbie. “And we’ve seen really small organisations grow.”

So far 85 young people have worked in placements (chosen to match their skills and interests) with another 30 starting this year. Worthwhile data shows that 77 per cent of its alumni have gone on to social impact jobs after completing the scheme. As it grows, Robbie hopes to see Worthwhile at the forefront of changing behaviour - in particular when it comes to where people decide to spend their working lives.
