The COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency are completely intertwined.

Never before have the public been so in favour of drastic deviation from the status quo, so let's take action now, says climate justice activist Magid Magid.

Magid spoke to Nesta's Madeline Gabriel about how we already have the ideas and resources to avert climate breakdown - and now we have the opportunity presented by the pandemic’s global, systemic shock.

Magid Magid

Magid Magid is a Somali-British race and climate justice activist/organiser and author who came to the UK as a refugee aged five. He is Founder & Director of Union of Justice. He was a member of the European Parliament representing Yorkshire & the Humber, Mayor of his beloved city, Sheffield and was also an elected councillor representing his community. Magid was named one of TIME’s 100 rising stars shaping the future of the world. Magid is also a custard connoisseur.

Madeleine Gabriel

Madeleine Gabriel leads Nesta’s mission to create A Sustainable Future, which focuses on decarbonisation and economic recovery. Her team is setting up innovation projects and partnerships exploring how to reduce carbon emissions from homes and, in the wake of COVID-19, how to boost productivity and help people find good work. She previously led Nesta’s work on inclusive innovation, researching ways to create an equitable, innovation-led economy in the UK. She has published widely on innovation practices that promote sustainability and social impact.
