An edited transcript will be available shortly.

In this Nesta talks to… Becky Lane, CEO and founder of Furbnow, was in conversation with Nesta’s Madeleine Gabriel and Alex Gilbert to talk about Furbnow’s mission and how it could help thousands of homeowners make their homes more energy efficient.

Passionate about bringing low-carbon technologies to homes, Becky created Furbnow through Nesta and the Founders Factory’s Mission Studio. Its business model supports homeowners seeking to retrofit their homes, taking the pain out of the process and steering customers towards green retrofit solutions that ultimately reduce carbon emissions. Furbnow provides a roadmap for homeowners, supporting them along the way from start to finish. Homeowners can decide which suggestions make the most sense according to their budget, with different levels of project support provided once they’ve established a plan for their home.

We’re building a platform that takes people through the steps, trying to build on best practices and advice in the industry…and ultimately trying to deliver value for customers

Becky Lane

Madeleine, Alex and Becky discussed current challenges for the energy market and how Furbnow is perfectly placed to provide solutions. High energy prices, concerns over energy security and legislative requirements to meet net-zero goals have increased the focus on energy efficiency. Until now, there had not been much incentive for people to upgrade their homes due to issues such as affordability. Current financial alternatives such as green mortgages and grants for low-income housing are gradually helping to increase demand. However, Furbnows’s research showed that it is difficult for consumers to even start complex construction projects, as a lack of available information, advice and easy access to trusted professionals can leave people feeling confused and prevent them from retrofitting their homes.

Furbnow is a market disruptor on a mission to transform the retrofit industry and its future roadmap aims to include monitoring houses post-retrofit. This enables households to evaluate the building’s performance and build confidence with the wider public as well as supporting homeowners to reduce carbon emissions, save money and create healthier homes.
