Nesta is a research and innovation foundation. We apply our deep expertise in applied methods to design, test and scale solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, working across the innovation lifecycle.
Mission Manager (Scotland) - A Fairer Start
Niall was Nesta’s Mission Manager for Scotland, working on the fairer start mission and based with the Scotland team in Edinburgh.
Niall spent the six years prior to joining Nesta at Sustrans Scotland. He led on the development of innovative approaches to widening participation in active travel with schools and communities across Scotland. Prior to Sustrans, he worked in education. First as a secondary school teacher and later within Ark, contributing to the development of the Mathematics Mastery partnership programme.
Niall brought frontline experience of the impact of disadvantage on young people’s development and attainment, and the complex mix of factors that shape people’s perceptions and experience of education and public services. He is passionate about disrupting this pathway and addressing the factors that can act to consolidate inequality.
Outside of work Niall is usually somewhere remote in Scotland, either on a bike or crammed into a van with wife, daughter, dog, bikes, kayak, fish and chips and a few pretentious craft beers.
We extend our impact through two specialised units that help people and organisations to solve complex problems and achieve their goals.
BIT helps clients from government, nonprofits and the private sector to improve people’s lives through our empirical problem solving and deep understanding of human behaviour.
Challenge Works designs and runs challenge prizes to spark innovation in science, technology and society.
