However, the NHS and adult social care are systems in crisis. Our health and care services are overstretched and already struggling to meet the changing needs of our population.

Looking to 2040, our population is projected to be older and less well. With 9.1 million people in England potentially living with major illness, and the poorest people in society experiencing the worst deterioration in their health, the case for building a healthier society is overwhelming.

For this project, the Health Foundation has pulled together nine fundamental facts that represent the major challenges facing the NHS, social care and public health services in England, and outlined some of the implications for policymakers.
The next UK government will face difficult choices on health and social care. These facts show that the challenges span managing immediate pressures, transforming and improving services for the long term, and all while taking steps to build a healthier population.
It is not inevitable that public services are overwhelmed because people are living longer. And living longer doesn't have to mean being sick for longer. Past experience shows real change is possible. But it will take long-term policy action and investment by government to turn the tide.
