About Nesta

Nesta is a research and innovation foundation. We apply our deep expertise in applied methods to design, test and scale solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, working across the innovation lifecycle.

Our mission aims to halve the prevalence of obesity in the UK.

Almost a third of adults in Scotland are living with obesity - the highest rate in the UK, according to official estimates. The health costs are staggering - equivalent to 3% of Scotland’s GDP - and behind that figure lies a growing burden of preventable illness affecting families across the country.

Ambitious health targets for supermarkets are one of the most potentially impactful interventions and could, if implemented effectively, reduce obesity by around 20% in Scotland and help achieve wider ambitions like halving the gap in healthy life expectancy.

Our policy asks

To create the greatest impact, the next Scottish Government and parliament should:

  • implement a mandatory healthy food standard for supermarkets with a healthiness target for businesses
  • prioritise regulation to change big business incentives
  • extend access to pharmacological interventions for those most in need
