About Nesta

Nesta is a research and innovation foundation. We apply our deep expertise in applied methods to design, test and scale solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, working across the innovation lifecycle.

From childcare to technical education, how can we give children and young people the best and fairest start?

Our fairer start mission is focused on increasing the number of children from poor backgrounds who reach their early developmental milestones.

By 2030 we're aiming to increase the proportion of children who:

  • access effective integrated family support services
  • have parents and caregivers who access evidence-based parenting support
  • access high-quality ECEC places

We're working to fill evidence gaps, and design, evaluate and scale evidence-based interventions, products and services, working in partnership with those at the frontline.

But policy change at the level of national government is a major lever of impact too, and our mission aligns closely with that of the UK government’s opportunity mission and the stated priorities of the Welsh and Scottish governments.

The policy team at Nesta is working to embed applied innovation within policymaking, bridging the policy-delivery divide and grappling with the evidence, trade-offs, politics and pragmatism of giving children and young people the best and fairest start.
