Commenting on the call from major businesses to phase out gas from electricity generation by 2035, Andrew Sissons, Deputy Director of Nesta's Sustainable Future mission, said:

“The UK needs to phase out gas from its electricity supply quickly, but we also need to make much more urgent progress in switching from gas boilers in our homes.

"We use more gas heating our homes than making electricity, and we need to end our reliance on gas to keep us warm. Replacing our gas boilers with heat pumps or heating networks and making our homes more energy efficient is not only crucial to tackling the climate crisis, it will also reduce our dependence on global gas markets.

"Switching our homes away from gas requires urgent action, and the industry needs direction from Government on its preferred approach. The Government should publish its Heat and Buildings Strategy without further delay, setting out a rapid, clear and credible path to decarbonising home heating.”

  • The UK uses around 37% of its gas for home heating (300 TWh), compared to 29% for electricity (230 TWh). Source: Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES): natural gas
  • Home heating makes up around 14% of the UK’s total carbon emissions, which will need to reach zero to meet the UK’s Net Zero obligation by 2050.
  • Around 85% of homes in Britain use gas boilers to heat their homes.
