Last week saw the launch of Solar Schools, which Nesta is supporting through the Innovation in Giving Fund. Over 30 schools are taking part in the project that provides them with a tailored website, offline resources and training to help them crowdfund the cost of installing solar panels.

Through a toolkit developed by 10:10 the schools have been able to integrate their traditional offline fundraising with newer, online approaches. The aim is to help schools cut carbon and boost budgets, while encouraging and enabling parents, neighbours, ex alumni and local businesses to contribute to a postive, local renewables project.

Following training sessions across the country, the schools got off to an incredible start and within the first 12 hours 21 Solar Schools went live on the Solar Schools site and there was significant media coverage. Hethersett Junior SchoolRoseberry Primary and Benjamin Britten High School all made their radio debuts on BBC Radio NorfolkBBC Radio Tees and BBC Radio Suffolk explaining why Solar Schools means so much to them and their school.

With the support of 10:10, the schools are aiming to raise between £8000 and £15,000 each over this academic year.
