About Nesta

Nesta is a research and innovation foundation. We apply our deep expertise in applied methods to design, test and scale solutions to some of the biggest challenges of our time, working across the innovation lifecycle.

We are recruiting for a Product Manager (12 month fixed-term)

About Nesta

We are Nesta, the UK’s innovation agency for social good. We design, test and scale solutions to society’s biggest problems. Our three missions are to give every child a fair start, help people live healthy lives, and create a sustainable future where the economy works for both people and the planet.

For over 20 years, we have worked to support, encourage and inspire innovation. We work in three roles: as an innovation partner working with frontline organisations to design and test new solutions, as a venture builder supporting new and early stage businesses, and as a system shaper creating the conditions for innovation.

Harnessing the rigour of science and the creativity of design, we work relentlessly to change millions of lives for the better. Find out more at nesta.org.uk

Whatever it takes

Everyone works at Nesta because we are driven by a deep commitment to our missions. A guiding principle of our culture is that we do whatever it takes to achieve them, bringing our best to all our work.

How will a Product Manager contribute to Nesta’s success?

As a Product Manager you will strategically deliver and derisk the scaling of priority digital products and services across our missions as they mature beyond early validation. You will ensure they have an outcome-focused strategy and roadmap to scale user and stakeholder value and mission impact, and will lead and manage multidisciplinary teams to use lean-agile principles, user-centered design, and data to iteratively improve solutions. You may also discover and validate new solutions, and help others grow lean-agile capabilities.

The role

  • Strategically deliver and de-risk the scaling of priority digital products and services as they mature beyond early validation to ensure sustained mission impact.
  • Develop outcome-focused strategies and roadmaps that align user value with mission goals and long-term sustainability.
  • Manage the full product lifecycle, from scaling and ongoing maintenance through to strategic retirement or spin-out.
  • Lead and manage multidisciplinary teams (e.g. design, data science, engineering, domain experts) to use live data and ongoing discovery to focus iteration toward increasing impact, and resolve roadblocks as needed.
  • Embed lean-agile principles to ensure teams release working solutions quickly and often, learning from real-world feedback and data to improve value.
  • Cultivate relationships with delivery partners and key stakeholders to support the widespread adoption and impact of products and services.
  • Translate complex user needs into concrete requirements and realistic release plans that match team capacity.
  • Identify new digital opportunities and occasionally undertake discovery to validate new solutions when mission needs evolve.
  • Support capability building through facilitating learning opportunities within a community of people interested or involved in product-related work.

The person

Essential

  • Strategic product scaling: Experience leading digital products and services through the transition from validation to sustained impact, with a focus on de-risking growth and navigating the complexities of scaling.
  • Iterative development and testing: Experience using lean-agile principles and using live data and ongoing discovery to focus product iterations toward increasing the impact and scale of existing solutions.
  • User focus: You have experience supporting multidisciplinary teams to develop digital products and services that meet the needs of users and stakeholders, as well as having the desired business and/or social impact; including helping them to uncover and understand user and stakeholder needs through user research and testing.
  • Outcome-focused planning: Ability to translate user needs and mission goals into strategic roadmaps and realistic release plans that account for team capacity and operational constraints.
  • Multidisciplinary leadership: Experience leading and managing multidisciplinary teams through the product lifecycle, aligning around strategic choices, establishing routines for releasing working solutions quickly to learn and improve, facilitating decisions and resolving roadblocks.
  • Stakeholder & partner management: Skilled at building relationships with delivery partners and technical/non-technical stakeholders to support progress and impact.
  • Lifecycle management: Experience managing products at various stages of maturity through to retirement.

Desirable

  • Hands-on prototyping: Comfortable using code or no-code/low-code tools to quickly validate new solutions when mission needs evolve.
  • Social impact focus: Experience developing digital products and services specifically designed for social impact or mission-driven outcomes.
