'Scaling up' means growing a social innovation's impact to match the level of need it's designed to address.

Our Making It Big report lifts the lid on some of the challenges and rewards social innovators face when scaling up, and argues that social innovators should consider developing more deliberate scaling strategies.

From some of the giants of social innovation to those just embarking on their scaling journey, the ‘scaling stories’ below chart the experiences of social innovators at various stages on their pathways to scaling up.

The examples here suggest there’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ strategy for scaling up. Instead, scaling strategies should be based on the strengths and unique propositions of each social innovation.

Following the publication of Making It Big, we’re keen to test and develop these ideas with social innovators to learn more about how scaling routes work in practice. We would welcome feedback to develop and improve the framework over time.
