Lateral flow test prototype

Helen Maynard Photography

This is a handheld test that can be used to test for multiple infections, using a variety of different samples – blood, urine or other fluids. The fluid is dragged up naturally and crosses a specific detection system built into the test, to show the result. It doesn’t need a power source to work and has a check line, so users know it is working.

Advantages:

  • it’s easy – it’s hand held and easy to understand the result
  • it’s tried and tested – tests of this kind exist for other uses – pregnancy, dengue, malaria and are used by anyone, those with or without clinical knowledge
  • it’s robust – it doesn’t need a power source, can usually be stored at +4°
