Is it possible to cut carbon emissions from the UK’s homes quickly, affordably and in a way that delights consumers?

Decarbonising homes is one of the thorniest challenges in getting to net zero, but innovators across the UK are already showing how it can be done.

This discussion brought together people working at the cutting edge of innovation to reduce household emissions. We asked: how can innovation and investment speed up the pace of change in decarbonising homes? How can innovators be supported to test new business models that help consumers to reduce or shift energy consumption, heat their homes differently, and change their behaviours? What regulatory changes could incentivise firms to innovate, while ensuring that changes don’t further disadvantage fuel-poor homes?

Questions and themes

  • How can policymakers encourage rather than block innovation around new technologies?
  • What are the regulatory obstacles to new models and approaches in domestic decarbonisation and how can these be overcome?

Session format

Each speaker had 5 minutes to present their one big idea to reduce household emissions followed by 10 minutes of audience Q&A before moving onto the next speaker.
