What I do

Joe leads Nesta Impact Investments, a £17.6m investment fund for innovative social ventures in the fields of ageing, young people and sustainability.

Joe is also a board member of Bethnal Green Ventures, the leading accelerator programme for technology based social ventures, on the Advisory Council of the Impact Investing Policy Collaborative.

Biography

Joe was previously as a senior manager at CAF Venturesome and began his career with the TeachFirst programme teaching in a secondary school in the London Borough of Hackney.

2013 drew to a close with more miserable evidence of the failure of the mainstream banking industry – even the self-declared ‘good guys’, an ethical bank, has lost trust and credibility in the minds of the general public. So what is on the horizon for 2014? Well it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to doing some good with your money.

Here at Nesta Impact Investments we are pleased to hear about the new tax reliefs for social investment promised in the Autumn Statement. It’s been glaringly obvious for some years that we needed to bridge the gap between tax reliefs on charitable donations and small company and venture capital reliefs.

Academics are increasingly worried about their impact in terms of media profile, but this shouldn't be at the expense of real impact.

I learned today that academics are suddenly worried about their impact, driven by the inclusion of impact as a criterion in the Research Excellence Framework. As explored in today’s Guardian, there appears to be a trend in academia to associate impact with increased media profile, case studies and generally good PR for the individual.

As many parents and children gear-up for the October half term, it's hard to believe that the new school year is already well underway. 10 years ago, I was getting over the shock of my first few weeks as a new secondary school teacher with TeachFirst. I was terrified and the half-term break came as a much-needed break.

The UK's comparative advantage in developing the impact investment market, together with the relatively small size of supply relative to present and future demand, provides an opportunity for the UK to lead the world in investing in public and social innovation, and in developing innovations in ways of financing for impact. The Impact Investment industry could be a great British success story.
