What I do

James Phipps is a Principal Researcher for the Innovation Growth Lab in Nesta’s Policy and Research Unit.

Before joining Nesta, James was a Senior Economist at BEIS where he led the Policy Development and Evaluation team in the Enterprise Directorate. He directed the analysis for various SME support and finance programmes and a large research programme, which examined the drivers and barriers to small business growth and entrepreneurship. James also established many RCTs during his time, ranging from small behavioural trials through to the Growth Vouchers Programme - the world's largest RCT to assess the impact of a business advice programme.

James holds a MSc in Economics from Warwick University and a BSocSc in Mathematical Economics from the University of Birmingham. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his young family and is a keen DIYer.

A month ago, we gathered over 250 policymakers, practitioners and researchers working in innovation, entrepreneurship and business growth for the Innovation Growth Lab Annual Conference. As we reflect on our own learning from the event, we asked several of those present for their key takeaways and highlights. This blog looks at a selection of those received.
