Semi Finalist 21: Wi-H2O (wireless-water)
Summary of the idea:
The idea of Wi-H2O is the meeting of the Smart Cities concept with the Internet of Things technologies. The Wi-H2O incorporates wireless technologies along with low-cost platform equipped with a suite of sensors capable to measure water consumption, detect losses through water leakages, allows the rapid recording and transmission of water consumption data among urban and rural consumers and the recognition of non-authorised access to water reservoirs. In addition, it facilitates the spatial leak detection, reduces detection time and provides a way for control, measurement and monitoring of water quality in water distribution networks, water supply and irrigation of agricultural crops.
The Wi-H2O allows the monitoring and measurement of the quantities of water entering and leaving water distribution network, automation of surveillance, measurement and pricing of water resources making them available to network operators and final consumers.
The Wi-H2O platform is envisaged to deliver fast water consumption information to network operators and consumers, enable network monitoring with innovative means for data transmission. Moreover it provides a way for water leakage administration, spatial detection of critical events related to water distribution network access, water quality indexes measurement for health related conditions.
The Wi-H2O idea aims at reducing water losses through undetected or small leakages and provides the network operators and final consumers a tool to monitor consumption, water quality and contribute to the water usage optimization in urban, suburban and rural areas as well as the agricultural field.
