A challenge prize series to build products or services with a social impact using open data.
The Open Data Institute and the Challenge Prize Centre at Nesta ran a series of seven challenge prizes to invite businesses, startups and individuals to develop innovative solutions to social issues using open data. We have run challenges in Crime and Justice, Education, Energy + Environment, Housing, Food and Heritage + Culture and Jobs.
For each challenge, teams were invited to build and test their ideas at a creation weekend where three teams of finalists were chosen to win £5,000 each. After an incubation phase, one finalist won a potential £40,000 to £50,000 prize and a bespoke package of incubation support. Winning projects were those which combined open data into products or services with a clear social impact and a sustainable ongoing model.
