Web Connect
The increasingly participatory culture of the web is changing the way we work, play and understand ourselves – and we’re doing it together.
In response to this, our Web Connect strand of activity is exploring how the web is influencing the UK’s capacity for innovation by allowing new collaborations, conversations and communities to flourish.
Web Connect is particularly interested in work that looks to understand:
- Web & Place: How can we develop our understanding of the relationship between the web and physical place? What are the implications and innovation opportunities of the increasingly mobile and pervasive web?
- Transactions: Given the possible motivations as to why people participate in online collaboration, what are the factors that best support the most successful outcomes?
- Structures of Collaboration: There are several variables that affect how collaborative projects are designed such as whether networks are closed or open, distributed or localised, or facilitated or self-organising. Which work best for specific contexts?
- Applications: What are the opportunities for finding powerful new applications for existing technology? And how can our learning about leading-edge web innovation be integrated into wider society?
Adventures in connection. NESTA Connect believes that all innovation is, in essence, something we do together. When boundaries are crossed, be they between organisations, interests or geographies, the new conversations that result can lead to effective action and unexpected benefits.
Web Connect aims to take advantage of NESTA’s unique position as a broker of new relationships to commission, produce and support experimental web-based projects, which are collaborative, innovative, practical - and perhaps a bit unexpected.
Web Science Research Initiative
The Web Science Research Initiative aims to to facilitate and produce the fundamental scientific advances necessary to inform the future design and use of the World Wide Web.
Social Innovation Camp
Social Innovation Camp will bring together some of the UK and Europe's top web professionals and social innovators to find solutions to social challenges, using easy-to-build web 2.0 tools.

Swarmtribes is a new type of community-engagement platform, which aims to connect musicians with their dedicated fans.
