Scotland's young people are determined to succeed

Scotland is making a substantial commitment to developing the skills and attitudes of its young people and in preparing them for the world of work and life beyond school. Read how Determined to Succeed is working to change cultures in schools to help tomorrow's workforce tackle the issues of the 21st century.

Preparing young people for the world of work

Scotland is leading the way in developing the skills and attitudes of its young people and in preparing them for the world of work and life beyond school. Through Determined to Succeed's strategy for developing enterprise in education and 'More Choices, More Chances' - the strategy to reduce the number of young people not in education, employment or training - change is happening at a record speed.

Determined to Succeed is improving the attitudes and skills of young people and better preparing them for their contribution to a wealthier and smarter Scotland.

Partnerships between employers and schools are key in making learning work-relevant, experiential and engaging and it is impossible to prepare young people for the world of work without support from employers. The Scottish Government has enjoyed overwhelming support from the business community and there are currently in excess of some 7,000 Determined to Succeed school business partnerships across Scotland.

Fostering a confident workforce

Determined to Succeed aims to change cultures in schools and among young people to help tomorrow's workforce tackle the issues of the 21st century. This means creating a future workforce who are confident, flexible, prepared to take calculated risks, and who want to make their ideas happen. Determined to Succeed is fundamentally about economic growth: young Scots must be ambitious, confident and creative if we're to compete globally.

Determined to Succeed complements the wider education reform currently underway in Scotland through Curriculum for Excellence by creating environments where enterprise can flourish. And alongside Skills for Work courses, young people are being given more chances for vocational learning through the provision of a wide variety of vocational subjects.

Determined to Succeed focuses on four key strands

  • Enterprising teaching and learning - Ensuring teachers have the skills and capacity to make their teaching relevant to the world of work, enabling young people to develop enterprising skills and attitudes as well as creative approaches to learning across the curriculum.
  • Entrepreneurial learning - Giving young people the chance to experience real business and work-related learning and offering opportunities for employers to become involved in supporting that learning.
  • Work-based vocational learning - Giving young people the opportunity to gain a qualification linked to work by experiencing and developing an understanding of the world of work in all its diversity supported by employers and teachers who can contextualise the learning.
  • Career education - Enthusing young people about the world of work, helping them to make the connections between learning and work, and equipping them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their future at every stage in their learning.

Enterprise in education is happening in all schools across Scotland and an enterprising ethos is developing. Teachers are embracing the strategy and delivering their subjects in an enterprising way, making learning more relevant to life beyond school and increasing the understanding of business and commerce in our young people.
