Learning about Learning

How will learning in Harris Academies develop? How can students and staff begin to create a new design for learning together?

Key ideas

There are 12 ideas that bring together all that the Harris Student Commission (developed last year to give students a say in how they learn) has been inspired and challenged by. These are divided into four areas:

  • The first focuses on learners to ensure deep and lasting motivation to learn
  • The second focuses on teachers and how the role of the professional in school needs to develop
  • The third is based on content and the curriculum, and how it ensures young people are engaged by it
  • The fourth focuses on partnerships to change the way learners and teachers work together

Social, technological and demographic changes mean that today's young people will be living in a very different world – one that will present both challenges and opportunities. To make the most of these changes, young people will need a broad range of skills combined with appropriate knowledge. They will also need to take more responsibility for their own education and how it is delivered to ensure that it equips them for the future.

The Harris Student Commission has been investigating how learning can develop within Harris Academies in south London. Its ideas are set out in this interim publication.
