Professor Marc Clement
Marc Clement was born in Llwynhendy, Llanelli and attended Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, followed by Llanelli Grammar School. He took a First Class Honours degree in Physics at Swansea University, winning the PM Davidson Prize for Theoretical Physics. He then took a PhD in Laser Plasma Interactions at Swansea University and the Rutherford Laboratory at Oxford.
He received a scholarship from the Royal Society to undertake post-doctoral studies at the Centre d’Etudès Nucleaires in Paris. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Physicist and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.
Marc was the founder of a laser company based in South West Wales, developing laser systems for plastic surgery and cancer therapy. He is one of the architects of the original Technium project and remains directly involved with the project.
In 2000, Marc was appointed Chair of Innovation at Swansea University and is the head of the university’s Institute of Innovation. He sits on the board of a number of technology companies and chaired the Expert Panel on Resource Management for the Welsh Assembly Government.
In 2006, Marc was appointed Executive Director at the Institute of Life Science, an interdisciplinary medical research centre at Swansea University, in partnership with IBM and the Welsh Assembly Government.
Most recently, in September 2007, Marc was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Wales.
