Who can enter the challenge?

The Workplace Cycle Challenge prize is open to all organisations with a base in the UK with a minimum of 10 employees in the UK. Contestants may only submit one entry. Employees of Nesta, other individuals working on the project, and their immediate families, are not eligible to enter.

I have entered my idea into another competition; can I submit the same idea to this competition?
Yes you are able to submit your idea even if you have submitted it to another competition. Please make sure you provide relevant and specific answers to our entry questions for this competition.

The other competition may have rules about you entering your idea in more than one competition. It is your responsibility to check this before you enter this competition.

Who has the intellectual property rights to my idea/submission?

You will retain intellectual property rights in your idea and submission. We may want to talk about your idea when promoting the challenge and sharing what we have learned from the prize, but you do not have to transfer intellectual property rights to us.

Can I remove my entry once I have submitted it?

Yes, you can send an email to cyclingchallenges@nesta.org.uk and request for your application to be removed.

If I enter for my organisation, who gets the prize money if we win?

We will pay the prize money to the organisation which has entered the challenge.

How are you working in partnership with CTC and Challenge for Change?

We have developed the prize in collaboration with CTC and Challenge for Change, building on and adapting their Workplace Cycle Challenges.  We intend to work with Challenge for Change on the collation and assessment of the results of Semi-Finalists and Finalists in the challenge.

How can someone prove that they cycled to work?

The competition will rely partly on self-reporting from organisations and their employees.  We will work with CTC Challenge for Change, building on their experience with their Workplace Cycle Challenges, to design additional checks on the results reported by organisations and their employees. We will also visit the finalist organisations to see their approaches in action. The judges' decision about the validity of any claims and data submitted is final.

Does to and from work include travels to and from work meetings?

Yes, travels to and from work meetings are included.

Can I report someone I suspect is cheating?
If you would like to report a matter like this, we advise that you thoroughly think the allegation through and if you still feel that it needs reporting then please send an email with all the relevant information to cyclingchallenges@nesta.org.uk and we will consider your report.

Can I apply to both the cycling challenges?

Yes, if you feel that you have the capacity and meet the eligibility criteria to enter both.

What's the timetable?

The timetable of the challenge is as follows:

  • 12pm on 12 November 2012: Deadline for entry
  • November 2012: Selection of 25 Semi-Finalists
  • Dec 2012 - April 2013: up to 25 Semi-Finalists set-up their new cycling programmes
  • May 2013: 3 week challenge to get the highest % increase in staff cycling for at least 10 minutes. At the end of the three weeks, based on these results, 5 finalists will be selected.
  • June 2013 - Sept 2013: Finalists have 6 months to further test their ideas. The winner will have achieved the highest percentage increase of trips to and from work by bike over this period, and show the most potential for keeping that impact going.
  • December 2013: Award Ceremony

How will you judge the entries?

We will appoint a specialist Judging Panel. We will publish the names of the Judges when they have been selected. The Judges' decisions will also be informed by an expert analysis of the results reported by the competitor organisations.

How will you select the winners?

The winners will be selected according to the challenge prize criteria:

We will judge entries in five categories, by size of organization:

  • 10-19
  • 20-49
  • 50-199
  • 200-499
  • 500+

We will not necessarily select an equal number of Semi-Finalists and Finalists in each category.

Up to 25 Semi-Finalists will be selected based on:

  • Potential for effectiveness in increasing number of employees cycling to and from work
  • How innovative the idea is
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Potential for keeping levels of cycling going after the prize
  • Potential for other organisations to use the same approach

Approximately 5 Finalists will then be selected after the 3 week challenge based on those that:

  • Demonstrate the highest percentage increase in staff cycling for at least 10 minutes over a period of 3 weeks
  • Potential for further effectiveness

The winner will be selected based on:

  • The highest percentage increase in number of trips to and from work cycled by employees over 6 months
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Potential for keeping levels of cycling going after the prize
  • Potential for other organisations to use the same approach

Who is funding the prize?

The Cycling Challenge Prizes are being funded by the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills and Nesta.

Will the prize go to one winner?

We expect that there will be one overall prize for the winner of the challenge. Judges may also decide to recognise a runner up innovation or innovations at their discretion.

How can the prize be used?

The prize should be used in ways that will help increase the number of people cycling in the UK. You are free to decide how to do this.

Why are you selecting the Finalists based on increasing the amount of staff cycling for 10 minutes a week?

10 minutes per week is a measure of success used by CTC and Challenge for Change in judging their Workplace Cycle Challenges.  It is recognised that this period of time is a good indicator that a change in behaviour in cycling is more likely to take place in the individuals who ride a bike for 10+ minutes.

Why will you not necessarily select a finalist in each of the business size categories?

We want to find the most promising ideas, regardless of the size of organisation they are submitted by.

Why are you judging the entries in categories?

We are judging in categories to enable comparison across similar sized organisations.
