13. Julie Light

Julie Light was born in London and after a career at the BBC and gaining a PhD in Media and Communications started to cast glass four years ago, learning from a number of renowned glass artists on short courses and evening classes. Julie now works from her studio in North West London, casting glass sculpture for exhibition and sale. Since starting to make glass sculpture, her work has been selected for a range of group shows in London and across the UK.
The pieces on display here are both drawn from her series inspired by medical imaging; cells and structures that are usually invisible are revealed using unimaginable scales of magnification. Reimagined in glass, these cells and structures have something of the same ethereal quality of X-rays or electron-microscope images, the innate quality of glass lending itself to depicting elements of the body that are usually unseen.
