Learning through Making
HummingBird is an educational robotics kit designed to engage secondary-aged students - particularly girls - into programming by creating artistic, physical designs. The tool inspires learners by facilitating artistic, tangible, applications of programming. Lights, sensors, and motors can be connected to the customised control board by inserting the leads of parts into plastic clamps on the board. Students programme their creations on a computer by dragging and dropping icons, so there is no need to be proficient in any computer languages. Teachers whose students have experimented with the kit say it fosters interest in technology among students aged 11 and up.
