No technology has an impact on learning on its own; it all depends on how it is used. Based on an analysis of learners' actions and the ways that they are resourced and structured, we have identified eight approaches to learning, or learning themes that are proven to be effective:

  • Learning from Experts
  • Learning with Others
  • Learning through Making
  • Learning through Exploring
  • Learning through Inquiry
  • Learning through Practising
  • Learning from Assessment
  • Learning in and across Settings

In Decoding Learning, researchers from the London Knowledge Lab and the Learning Sciences Research Institute, University of Nottingham examined over 1,000 research and teacher-led resources to identify 210 innovations that showed the potential for digital technology to support learning. So what do these look like? Here we offer eight examples of innovations in action across each of these learning themes.
