Maslaha, which in Arabic means 'for the common good', seeks to empower disadvantaged Muslim communities to overcome social inequalities through education and inspiration.

Since beginning in Bethnal Green in 2008, Maslaha has worked to address social disadvantage and inequalities in health, education and other sectors by producing resources which educate and inspire. Its resources are now used across the country as well as internationally.

To date, the work has ranged from health information programmes addressing diabetes, heart disease, and perinatal mortality to educational resources focusing on STEM subjects, as well as I Can Be She, an aspirational website and creative workshop programme for young Muslim women.

Maslaha also develops physical and online exhibitions which explore the historical exchange of ideas between societies. The organisation is currently working to codify its approach so that it can be used in other countries and in partnership with other communities.

By opening up spaces to ask questions and challenge perceptions, the hope is to increase understanding of Islam and its contribution to society in a broader context.
