This is a working paper on Collective Intelligence. Have we missed anyone? Is there anyone in the field you think we should speak to? As ever, we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Overview

Over the last few years there has been growing interest in Collective Intelligence: how do groups, organisations, societies or nations mobilise their intelligence to create new opportunities, make the most of those that are already out there, and avoid threats. Several technologies and organisation models related to this have garnered huge interest. They include:

  • Data mapping, mining, management and mashing
  • Crowd-sourcing, user engagement in design, decisions and production, production markets and open innovation
  • Collaborative research and development
  • Mass participation
  • Gaming, simulations and virtual worlds

Collective Intelligence and the ways to achieve it are of great relevance to contemporary debates on innovation: as the stock of human knowledge increases and fields become more specialised, a bigger role is being played by teams and networks rather than lone individuals.  Invention and innovation increasingly occur when boundaries between people and disciplines are bridged.   Better integration and deployment of distributed pools of knowledge and expertise may lead in time to more success in meeting needs and growing wealth.

This is why we propose to build our knowledge in this area, with the aim of generating practical outputs on what works in Collective Intelligence, and why.
