For the cyclist in your life, help keep their bike safe all year long by picking up an innovative new bike lock.

Earlier this year, Nesta announced the winner of the Hands Off My Bike Challenge: BiKLOX.

The challenge, hosted by the Centre for Challenge Prizes, asked innovators to design a bike lock that could help reduce the number of bikes stolen each year.

In 2012, over 500,000 bikes were stolen in the UK – about one bike each minute. Once a bike is stolen, it’s rare to get it back – in 2012, the recovery rate of a stolen bike was under 5 per cent.

BiKLOX was chosen by the judges for its design, lightweight features and most importantly, security.

The portable bike lock has a locking bar that fits between wheel spokes to immobilise the pedal, with an additional cable lock to further secure the bike.

For the Hands Off My Bike Challenge, each bike lock was judged by the amount of time it took to free the bike, the impact on the environment, cost and potential for commercialisation.

Now ready for purchase, BiKLOX is a great addition to any cyclist’s gear.
