Why are we doing this?

The New Radicals list is an antidote to the many rankings of the rich, powerful and famous so often presented in the media. We want to highlight and support the people working tirelessly to shape our world for the better, and bring them together to learn from each other.

What are we doing?

Every two years Nesta and the Observer put out a call for nominations and entries for individuals, organisations and initiatives from around the UK developing creative ways of tackling society's biggest challenges.

A final list of 50 is published in the Observer New Review and on the Nesta website, followed by a celebration event to bring the new and alumni New Radicals together.

Following the publication of the 2012, 2014 and 2016 lists, applications for the fourth New Radicals list opened in March 2018. The deadline for applications was 11.59pm on 29 April 2018.

Criteria:

• Organisations of all sizes will be considered ranging from one-person-shows to established companies.
• The project, initiative or company must have been going for at least six months and not in operation before January 2015.
• Entries must be able to demonstrate evidence of success and sustainability.
• All entries must be based in the UK and not be primarily motivated by profit.

The 2018 list will decided by the following panel of judges:

1. Josh Babarinde: Founder and chief executive of Cracked It, an award-winning social enterprise smartphone repair service staffed by young ex-offenders and youth at risk.
2. Jaya Chakrabarti: Bristol-based digital activist and co-founder of open data anti-slavery register tiscreport.org and digital comms agency Nameless.
3. Sylvia Douglas: Founding director of MsMissMrs CIC, a social enterprise based in Glasgow that re-empowers women and girls through self- development programmes.
4. Kerry Hudson: Author of two award-winning novels: Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice-cream Float Before He Stole My Ma and Thirst.
5. Raheel Mohammed: A New Radical in 2012, he founded Maslaha, focused on making long-term change on issues such as health, education, criminal justice and women’s rights in Muslim communities.
6. Ruth Ibegbuna, former Chief Executive of youth leadership charity, RECLAIM
7. Mehmoona Pervaz: Teenage campaigner from Bradford who helped set up Speakers’ Corner in the city.
8. Cassie Robinson: Strategic design director at Doteveryone and co-founder of the Point People, Tech for Good Global and the Civic Shop.
9. Michael Sheen: An actor and activist with roles such as patron of Social Enterprise UK and Unicef ambassador.
10. Mick Ward: Chief officer for adults and health at Leeds city council.
11. Stian Westlake: Adviser to the minister for universities, science, research and innovation. He is co-author of Capitalism Without Capital (Princeton, 2017).
12. Yvonne Roberts: Former leader writer of the Observer. Co-founded New Radicals with Geoff Mulgan.
13. Geoff Mulgan: Chief executive of Nesta.
14. Jane Ferguson: Editor, Observer New Review.
