Innovative People: Characteristics & behaviours of innovative individuals within organisations

Researcher:

Professor Fiona Patterson & Geraldine Gatto-Roissard, City University and Dr. Máire Kerrin Work Psychology Group.

Description

This project will develop an integrative framework to understand the characteristics and behaviours of innovative people in organisations. This is important as there has been little attempt to synthesise the psychology, business and management literatures in this area.

The research will also review the impact of organisational strategy, HRM systems, reward policy and other interventions on innovation. How do work groups, team climate, and leadership style enhance or inhibit innovation? What role do managers play in fostering a culture of innovation?

Finally, there is a whole industry of tools and methods claiming to enhance innovation in individuals and organisations. Of those, few have been rigorously validated or linked to outcomes. This project will review the evidence for the effectiveness of these intervention methods on innovation in organisations.

These important questions will be addressed through a literature review and interviews with senior stakeholders from the public, private and voluntary sectors. An electronic survey will be sent to organisations and will focus on evaluating interventions and linking innovative behaviours to performance outcomes.
