Description/aims
Established in 1986, Heads, Teachers and Industry (HTI) Ltd, encourages a greater overlap between the worlds of business and education, with clear benefits for both parties. As well as offering business leadership training to teachers, HTI also supports businesses' direct involvement with young people's education, with the aim of making school leavers more employable.
Why we funded
NESTA is supporting a series of seminars in three geographical regions, Bristol, Birmingham and the Camborne-Pool-Redruth area in Cornwall as part of HTI's project, 'Skills Gap: Myth or Reality?'.
The idea is that by making it possible for young people to acquire new, business-related skills and get a better grasp of their options within the local, national and global economies, the better equipped they will be for the workplace. Meanwhile, businesses can recruit locally and fill existing skills gaps.
Each event will involve local authorities as well as senior educationalists and local and national business representatives. The first of these events took place in Bristol in May 2006, with speakers Heather Tomlinson from Bristol City Council and Sir Digby Jones, CBI.
Impact/benefit
The outcome of the first event has been extremely positive, with a good response from Bristol City Council, GE Capital and the DfES. These groups are now engaged in a process of aligning business commitments with schools' needs.
Of NESTA's involvement, HTI's Trust Director, Roger Opie says: "NESTA has shown a keen interest in what we're doing and have been very helpful - they've been great to work with."
