How to Step Out

Working with Stepping Out, we've published a book to inspire and guide public sector workers thinking of leading a mutual or social enterprise spin out, based on the personal stories and experiences of the pioneers who have done it.

Despite the encouraging rhetoric of recent years the reality is that there is little experience of organisations having spun out of the public sector. That's why NESTA have worked with Stepping Out to publish 'How to Step Out' - a guide based on the experiences of those who have spun out.

Contents

  • Determining whether your business is a runner
  • Finding the support you need to make it happen
  • Understanding what Commissioners of services really think
  • Learning how to deal with pensions, TUPE and the people factors
  • Planning for and financing growth

Response to the book

"An incredible and insightful resource for anybody considering 'spinning out'. Perfectly captures the challenges, the learning and the ultimate rewards from those who have been there, done it and are now proudly wearing the social T-shirt. Accessible, inspiring and invaluable."
Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive, Social Enterprise UK
