Gopal Dutta

Description

Filmmakers Gopal Dutta and Nav Kandola are developing youth-orientated programmes for their broadband TV channel, Boda Loka TV. In contrast to existing Asian TV channels, Boda Loka TV is targeted at second and third generation South Asians. It will feature documentaries that explore contemporary issues, from race and culture to ecology.

Boda Loka TV

Why we funded

NESTA's support is enabling Boda Loka TV to address a global audience, fostering an information network for urban South Asians around the world.

Nav and Gopal say there is currently no other TV channel available for this audience. "We found that most of the satellite channels concentrate on programmes made for older first generation migrants and have been slow to adapt to the changing lifestyles of the second and third generation audiences like Nav and myself," says Gopal.

"This is a niche market and we want to keep it small and ensure good quality," says Gopal.

Impact

The pair want to showcase creative and informative programmes that are rarely seen by South Asian audiences, such as what young people around the world are doing or how culture is changing.

Gopal's recent work on the Sikh community in Huddersfield has already been shown on Channel 4.
