Nesta always had a fairly unique status given that we were an NDPB but independently financed through an endowment from the National Lottery. In October 2011 the Government announced the 3 critieria by which organisations would remain NDPBs.
Whilst Nesta did not meet those criteria it was felt that the work we do was unique and should continue. The Government also made clear that they thought we would be better placed to do this outside the public sector as a charity and subject to charity commission approval.
