Ian Davis, Managing Director Emeritus of McKinsey & Company, gave a powerful lecture on the global challenges facing the UK economy in the next decade.
Ian drew on his many years of experience guiding some of the world’s leading businesses and organisations through the minefields of innovation.
He highlighted the importance of paying as much attention to efficiency as to innovation, of consistency in both communicating a clear sense of purpose around why an organisation is innovating, and aligning that with signals that demonstrate that management takes it seriously.
He stressed that innovation isn’t just about R&D. He said that it can come in many other forms such as organisational innovation, marketing innovation or indeed any change that creates wealth.
He argued that this is why the best innovation happens in an environment of openness; where people from different parts of the organisation and beyond can feed into the process.
He concluded by saying that innovation is not the preserve of the few and encouraged all firms to involve young people as they have open minds uncluttered with experience.
