Derek has been working as a scholar/practitioner in international affairs and public policy for twenty years, including almost ten years with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, with whom he remains affiliated. Miller, and his colleague Lisa Rudnick, were pioneers in bridging cultural research, design, and international public policy. Miller was educated at Sarah Lawrence College, Georgetown, Oxford, and the University of Geneva. His work focuses principally on international peace and security, development, humanitarian action, and administrative behavior.
Derek is also an award-winning novelist whose debut, 'Norwegian by Night', was selected for seven literary awards. In October 2013, the novel was awarded the Crime Writer's Association John Creasy Dagger Award for a debut crime novel, and in 2014 at Crimefest it was awarded the eDunnit Award and the Goldsboro Last Laugh Award. 'Norwegian by Night' was further nominated for the Strand Magazine Critic's Award for Best First Novel, the American Bookseller's Association's 2014 Indie Choice Award, Book of the Year for Adult Debuts, Barry Award for Best First Novel and the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery. His next novel, 'The Girl in Green', is forthcoming in 2016.
