Together with the Open Data Institute we ran a series of Open Data Prizes, using a challenge prize approach to explore how to use open data to address seven social challenges. We were looking for solutions with the potential to impact positively upon the challenges, and which have a credible plan and market.

Each of the seven themes started with a definition day to hone the questions we wanted to tackle. This was followed by a period of time to open up data sources, and to develop and refine ideas to present at an innovation and creation weekend. Three ideas were selected from the weekend and offered £5,000 each to develop their idea over a three-month period, after which time one final winner was selected to receive the grand prize of £40,000-£50,000.

The first theme, focused on crime and justice.. We also shaped themes focused on energy and the environment, and midata.

This information session outlined our aims for the programme and updates on these three themes. It was an opportunity to hear from the Nesta and ODI teams and talk with those leading each of the current themes and to meet others interested in the programmes.
