As a bit of a social media geek, I loved following tweets and chatting online about Olympic events as I watched the action unfold. Dubbed by organisers as 'The Social Olympics', applications like Twitter have been used in way not seen before at an Olympics.

As Scotland gears up for its annual swell of visitors during the festival season; the world also awaits the summer release of Disney/Pixar's latest 3D animated film, Brave. Set in medieval Scotland, Brave features a fiery red-headed heroine, tons of tartan and highland scenery galore.

I am sure we all have experience of news articles telling us that there is a new bit of technology guaranteed to make our lives in to some kind of Utopian existence.  The new gadget to save you time, the new home appliance to halve the amount of work you need to do.  And yet, technology is also sometimes thought of as a nuisance, something that interferes rather than helps.

Open isn’t without its challenges, but we could change the world…

Nesta has just announced four projects that we will be funding through our Make it Local Scotland programme, helping councils open their data and work with a software developer in order to develop entirely new, web-based public services. We will be working with five local authorities in Scotland, spanning Scotland’s largest cities as well as rural areas - including an island at (nearly) the most northerly tip of the UK.
