Feast of Innovation Workshops

John Whatmore - 18.12.2011

We have just held a 'Feast of Innovation Workshops' at City University where a unique collection of workshop leaders, each of four in turn leading a workshop on the same stage of innovation process, demonstrated the need to adapt the style of your workshop to its theme.

From ethnographers to (several) inventers of games, to craftspeople, to conversation creaters, there was a remarkable variety to the inventiveness of the workshop leaders.

Jan Sargent brought along a couple of actors to enable us to play through an issue; and Charles Waples drew the event - on a huge piece of paper.

Research with the Royal College of Art into Innovation Workshops has illustrated how they are increasingly becoming a mainstream tool of managers beset with the need to find new ways of doing things. That research will continue to explore

  • the skills of workshop leaders
  • the different elements that contribute to different workshops, and
  • the ways in which innovation workshops are used - especially in the early-stages, and in the late stages of the development of innovations; and especially in terms of what the arts can tell us.
