The French government's strategy unit has just published 500 propositions, innovations et curiosités sociales venues de l'étranger.
It's a rather rambling and uneven list but full of examples of social initiatives that I was unaware of. This willingness to scan is becoming a crucial core competence for governments - and still culturally very hard for big countries like the UK, US and France which tend to assume they are the font of all wisdom. So it's a very welcome sign and a useful compendium.

One of the 500 innovations is...
One of the key innovations in Europe for the last decade is the expansion of participatory budgeting. I spent a gap year in 2012 between Great Britain and Portugal investigating what is happening after working in France.
During 2013, "Learning to count" is coming. This collaborative documentary movie will show schools and highschools and city councils (Berkhamsted, Trofa, Poitier, Lille) where young people can learn by practising direct democracy.
